Warren Buffetʼs Secret To Success

Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and the worldʼs eighth wealthiest person has a simple method to prioritization. He credits this method with his ability to refuse anything that doesnʼt align with his personal goals, and his sharp, highly focused approach to business.

Buffettʼs secret to focus is quick, actionable, and easy to implement in your own life... If youʼre committed to seeing it through.

The 2 List Strategy

The origin of Buffettʼs 2 list strategy comes from a conversation between him and his pilot.

Curious to evaluate his pilotʼs priorities, Buffett asked him to do two things:

One: Write out a list of 25 goals Two: Circle the 5 most important goals

Two: Circle the 5 most important goals

When Buffett asked his pilot what he would do next, the pilot remarked that he would “focus on the top 5, and find intermittent time for the other 20.” But Buffett disagreed.

He told his pilot that the top 5 goals must be his ONLY focus, and that the other 20 should be completely ignored until the top 5 were finished.

If youʼre focused on a list of 25 goals, itʼs impossible to put adequate effort into those that are most important. You canʼt possibly accomplish all 25 in a decent time frame, and trying to do so will push the most important tasks to the background of your overall strategy.

Learn to say NO

Perhaps the most important part of Buffettʼs strategy is learning to say “no.” He emphasizes that anything that did not align with his top 5 goals was ignored. By always saying “no,” Buffett opened the door to his success and accomplishing his lofty goals with ease.

Try It Yourself

To determine your top five goals, follow the same strategy Buffett had his pilot go through

ONE: Write a list of your top 25 goals for the next 10 years

TWO: Circle your top 5 goals

THREE: Place the 20 less-important goals to the side, and align your behaviors, thoughts and actions with your top 5 priorities, every single day.

BONUS: Hang your top 5 goals somewhere you will easily and regularly see them for a constant reminder of your focus. Vision boards, digital notes, or framed lists are a great way to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind.

Warren Buffetʼs secret to focus

Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and the worldʼs eighth wealthiest person has a simple method to prioritization. He credits this method with his ability to refuse anything that doesnʼt align with his personal goals, and his sharp, highly focused approach to business.

Buffettʼs secret to focus is quick, actionable, and easy to implement in your own life...If youʼre committed to seeing it through.

The 2 List Strategy

The origin of Buffettʼs 2 list strategy comes from a conversation between him and his pilot.

Curious to evaluate his pilotʼs priorities, Buffett asked him to do two things:

One: Write out a list of 25 goals

Two: Circle the 5 most important goals

When Buffett asked his pilot what he would do next, the pilot remarked that he would “focus on the top 5, and find intermittent time for the other 20.” But Buffett disagreed.

He told his pilot that the top 5 goals must be his ONLY focus, and that the other 20 should be completely ignored until the top 5 were finished.

Why the 2 list strategy works

If youʼre focused on a list of 25 goals, itʼs impossible to put adequate effort into those that are most important. You canʼt possibly accomplish all 25 in a decent time frame, and trying to do so will push the most important tasks to the background of your overall strategy.

By choosing 5 goals to focus on, and only allowing yourself to focus on those, you remove the mental “clutter” your other goals are creating. This honed in, centralized approach will directly impact your actions, your thoughts, and your behaviors. If you align every one of your mental and physical decisions with these top 5 goals, youʼll be ruthless in your efforts to achieving them.

Learn to say NO

Perhaps the most important part of Buffettʼs strategy is learning to say “no.” He emphasizes that anything that did not align with his top 5 goals was ignored. By always saying “no,” Buffett opened the door to his success and accomplishing his lofty goals with ease.
